The Cronulla riots is a perfect example of "real racism and hatred emerging". WHY?
Well, because in the years leading up to the riots police were hamstrung and were very reluctant to arrest or target those of a middle eastern background for fear of being labeled racist.
People from the shire (and the same was happening in Bondi) were getting fed up with the inaction of police and the continual harassment of people, especially Australian anglo females on the beaches.
This inaction and oversensitivity towards young middle-eastern men in this area, as you say, inch by inch created the conditions for real racism to occur with a full scale riot which was a build up of years of tension.
Pandering to minority groups for fear of being labeled a racist, only causes resentment amongst the majority.
