We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world and about the biggest emitters of carbon per head in the world.

As we have a small population its correct what you say Watso that overall our emissions are minuscule compared to the rest of the world. However, if we as an affluent country dont do our bit and show the way how can we expect pressure to be put on all the large scale polluting countries around the globe including developing low standard of living third world countries to reduce emissions.

China and India's population are entitled to try and lift their peoples standard of living which means greater industrialisation and more emissions. How can we as a relatively rich country persuade them to go clean energy if we ourselves dont make some sort of an effort. China and other countries are trying to diminish the rate of increase by investing heavily in cleaner energy but much more is needed because their massive development will see emissions continue to rise .

A number of countries have emissions trading schemes and I have no doubt that as time progresses and our climatic conditions continue to deteriorate the world will place greater emphasis on emissions reduction. Its the planets and future generations sustainability that is at stake.
