My experience in the Defence force has been that many more sailors than soldiers have tatts.

I think Tatts, piercings, pants around the arse, and lots of other trends I see are an attempt by the wearer to fit in with a particular part of society. It gives them a sense of belonging and a reason to be.

Like many other trends over the years, headbands, haircuts.

It comes from a deep seated need to belong, to be needed , to be a part of something bigger than their own lives and to be loved.

Another world wide trend is religion, a deep seated need to fit in and to be part of something bigger than just their own tiny lives.

I include myself and every one in this theory.
