Both left and right have done a great job of focusing on factors that are almost completely insignificant in terms of improving student performance.

Meanwhile in the real world we fall further behind countries where the education culture revolves around hard work and parental encouragement.
Many teachers complain about a bloated curriculum full of topics that aren't required. Indeed I believe the authors of this report have discussed the bloated curriculum. Not only is religion something without a place in state schools it crowds out more important topic areas like maths and science where many, many students are below par.
