There are figures available on per capita consumption of alcohol. In 1975 per capita consumption of alcohol per person aged 15+ was 13.1 litres per annum. By 1995 that had declined to 9.8 litres per annum. That then rose to 10.8 litres per annum by 2007, before declining to 10.1 litres per annum by 2012. So Australians are in a downtrend in per capita drinking, with consumption per capita 24% below where it was 40 years ago. The body mass per person (which affects intoxication) has also significantly increased. Whatever problem we may with alcohol consumption, it's massively less than it was 40 years ago. Wowserism per capita on the other hand is wildly out of control.
