I think you are getting God confused with 'religion'.
Here's what I mean, to borrow from your post:
With Christ, a person could be truly free - and no need to worry about judgement day - a person could do good, without worrying about earning brownie points for eternal life - the fear of hell becomes meaningless.
Only in this case you don't have to try and dodge around hell or pretend that judgement doesn't exist while convincing yourself that you are 'free' from it. :)
