For what it's worth this is my no fail way of cooking steak (usually scotch fillet, and from Woolies). Get your pan hot, oil and season your meat, cook on high until some blood starts to come to the top of the steak and then it's time to turn it over. It's important not to play with the steak or move it around, cook it for another minute for rare and a min and a half to two mins most. Take it out and let it rest.
