BHP Billiton's chief people officer, Karen Wood, said the decision made business sense as a way to retain and attract the best staff. "The most important thing in our business is to keep our skilled people," she said.
Ms Wood said there was an "incredible cost" in losing people the organisation had trained and developed.
Ms Wood said if a government scheme were introduced, BHP would not cut back its offer.
