Scratch and sniff most atheists and you find a person who has been inoculated against the various churches by illogical, impossible to believe reasoning or some unfortunate or disturbing incident. Most belief in a Big Something that caused creation. The rise of a rabid new breed of atheists is almost entirely the fault of the churches and their ridiculous dogma.
You can't expect an educated person to believe the Adam and Eve story as a literal fact. Or for that matter the story of Noah, and marching two of every animal into a boat, then flooding the entire world. jtaylor1's post is no less than this anti-wisdom, anti-knowledge deserves.
The doctors of religion have so much to answer for. They have, as jtaylor points out, turned the bible, and other holy books into fairytales. There is and has always been a power play at work.

2,000 plus years on with the God given gift of scientific advances and a vastly superior education for all and we are still dishing up literal rubbish as Christian theology. Knowledge of the realities of life come to us from a very broad church. Scientific understanding is not of man, it is a God-given, pre-existing truth that we are stumbling into and it is ripping away the layers that have veiled the eyes for too long.
Religion is in decay for lack of the very reasons you address to us from Colossians. In its stead comes a confused quasi-atheism or even worse, complete hedonist apathy.
