The metaphor of an iceberg explains how the mind works, the conscious mind is the tip of the iceberg, where the majority of our mental processes are represented by the greater bulk of the iceberg (the unconscious) which sits below the surface and hence is obscured from conscious awareness.
Freud emphasised that incongruence between conscious and unconscious desires/ drives, is the source of mental instability and conflict....
