If the concentrate is 1% cobalt, 40% iron, 50% sulphur and 4% other (silica etc..) by weight after roasting the material will be half the weight more or less. Double checked with two friends that work in roasting at Sun Metals Zinc refinery, I worked there briefly but in leaching and purification, the Zinc concentrate there was averaging about 25% sulphur. Products were obviously zinc and lead, by products silver, copper/cobalt cons, cadmium to name three. So you end up with a product containing 2% cobalt, then leach out the iron content as Garndo pointed out to increase the grade further. Will ring a friend that is a chemical engineer that worked at Queensland nickel refinery for a few years and ask questions about the cobalt extraction plant there.
