If he was any sort of a decent bloke if he couldn't match your offer or come to some agreement he would tell you to take it.I know it pulls at the heart strings but just remember you are getting a payrise akin to what some people have to live on for the year.These days you have to look after no.1.Good luck whichever way you go.
