God's space as you call it hasn't shrunk all that much given that only around 10% of the world's people admit to being atheist.
Most on the other hand hold some form of belief in a higher, all encompassing power, even though many in our society do not attend formal religious institutions. There are many seekers today and many places to look.
3%-5% of Americans are atheists. Probably more here, but just have a think about much of the rest of the world's populations and cultures.
