I very much doubt that churches will give up the idea of tithing in a hurry. For some their very existence depends on it, for others it represents a source of significant wealth.
I have no problems with churches requesting their followers to pay - it's up to people what they do with their money. But I do take issue with the tax breaks that people get for supporting a religion and the missionary zeal that some have.
I appreciate that some of the contributions go to helping others, and that there is a case for providing a tax break for these (like any other charity), but not for running churches and paying pastors, priests, fathers etc. In my view contributions to charity should be separate from those to run churches.
