re: u.f.o.s - seeing is believing! On a night in 1976, I was trout fishing with my father at Waroona Dam (now called Lake Navarino). It was about 10pm near the end of the fishing season, and despite being the new moon, ther was not even a rise.
It was completely pitch black and back then we were wearing glasses with tiny battery powered bulbs on each end of our fishing glasses so we could see where we were. We were the only ones there.

Suddenly a massive light appeared above the tree line, what I imagine to be the size of the sun. The whole dam lit up and the trees suddenly had very long shadows. I could see my father's face. It shone for about 30 seconds and it just disappeared behind the forest. It glided down very slowly.We still talk about it.

It sounds now like a meteorite breaking up in the atmosphere - it never reached any newspaper, but I still wonder what we saw that night.
