Of course The widespread unpopularity among voters of Tony Abbott as PM, as referenced by ANU to be the most unpopuar going back 30 years, is of relatively little significance for now.
But defenders of the PM - and there are plenty on this thread - shouldn''t delude themseleves: the results of such polling is forensically examined by all politicians and those in the game.
What else have they got to go on? If you like, it's the science part of politics.
If Tony Abbott's unpopularity continues to remain low, the backbenchers - whose primary function is to ge re-elected - will start stirring and looking elsewhere because they want to keep their seats.
Of course it's not happening now because the new govt is only a few months old, but it will in due course.
The problem for Tony Abbott, who dumbed himslef down to become the master of the three word cliche, is that he probably hasn't got the wherewithall to turn the whole shebang around.
And this is still in their honeymoon period. Wait till after the slash and burn budget and the govt and its leader will truly be malodorous.
This mob won't last beyond one term, in part because of Tony Abbott's unpopularity.
But they could change leader and that's a whole new ball game.
