Hi Soul
All dark pool trades must be registered on the lit exchange..... that is the ASX in our case. They come up as cross trades of special facilitated trades. They are registered after the buyer and seller have been matched in the dark pool.
30% of all share trading in OZ is done in dark pools according to the latest investigation by ASIC.
A dark pool trade can only be registered on the ASX at asking value or above. That is why market makers manipulate share prices up and down (amongst several other reasons why they do that stuff!!).
Dark pools are operated by market makers and direct market participants (banks and brokers mainly). There are about 24 authorised participants in OZ.
I hope this helps.
Cheers
