Online currency IS the norm. It's called the Australian Dollar, (AUD), and is spendable on-line, and at EFTPOS machines. Moreover, the banks and credit card companies which provide you with this facility are legally obliged to make up any thefts or misappropriation of funds so long as you haven't been negligent (with PIN numbers, for example) - if your account is hacked - they make good, not you take the losses.
The AUD can be mined successfully through on-line applications, with the possibility of having the AUD credited to your account within hours.
Nor has money laundering been left out of the possibilities for AUD. It is actually available in coin (ironic that you can't get a physical bitCOIN) and note form if you want to pay the plumber or the electrician for the "mates rates" for the job. The AUDnote and AUDcoin are also useful for minor purchases where EFTPOS isn't available. Yet.
AUD is also tradeable on many FOREX markets. It can go up and down against major currencies just like bitcoin.
AUD - all the advantages of a virtual currency, with none of the drawbacks!
