Anatol, maybe do us all a favour (as I think your research is definately worthwhile) and email [email protected] and ask him those questions around coal rank, kerogen, vitrinite inflection etc yourself.
They are all relevant questions and if you are struggling to find the answers then maybe it is best to get it directly from the horses mouth. DW certainly knows his coals (he is a long term CSG guy), so I am sure he will have an educated response for you on those. Why waste any more time researching the hell out of it when you can clear up some things pretty quickly.
Oh, and once you get the answers can you put them up on here for everyone else too !
