It would make sense to a motorist to take out two cyclists than have a head on with a car/ truck.
It would make more sense for the motorist to have a bit of patience and wait for the road to be clear. If the motorist is in a position where he/she needs to make that sort of choice in a hurry, he/she has already made a really bad call.
If cyclists want company, then purchase communication headsets and ride in single file.
Bad move. Really, really, really bad move. I shake my head in despair whenever I see cyclists wearing headphones (and presumably listening to music as they ride) - it blocks out the ambient noise of the traffic around us, and that's a critical part of our safety. Communication headsets have the same issue.
On H/ways trucks are passing you at 100k and wind buffer would be dangerous to Two up cyclists I would imagine.
Poor communication on my part; I was thinking about urban roads as I was writing my comments, as that is a reflection of my cycling situation. On a rural highway, it would depend very heavily on road conditions (good shoulder? Bad shoulder? Etc.) as to whether riding two abreast is a good idea or not. Legal, yes, absolutely. Good idea? Mmm, jury's out on that one; I'm not going to even try to argue the general point, as conditions can vary so wildly - it really is something that needs to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. Single file on a country highway? Not the most comfortable of cycling experiences, but if visibility is good, it should be safe enough. (note the "if"!)

All I'll say on the subject is that, if the road is steep and narrow, but carries a lot of motorised traffic, it's probably not a good choice for a cyclist. If there are no alternatives, then perhaps it would be appropriate for the local government authority to look into setting up an alternative route for cyclists (of course, that would depend on just how much it would be used, and that can be difficult to judge - are there few cyclists because the route is too dangerous, or because there's no interest?)
