Initial payments could be anything, even just for expenses associated with the replacement plane/crew to keep the route going and for expenses of family members and SAR...
I would have thought that the real payments and damage assessments would take some months to negotiate through with some real figures to back it up...
Insurance companies are not too quick to pay in my experience except for some small initial costs that are not too likely to be disputable.
