As reported the other day the handshake signals from the engine modems gave two possible location arcs which are a mirror image of each other. One in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern hemisphere. The area that Australia is responsible for searching is the Southern one shown in the link below. They deduced that the Northern arc was a less likely destination because the plane would have most likely been picked up on radar there.
