Here is a take on the subject
SCIENCE NEEDS RELIGION
Extract: "Religion needs science to keep it away from superstition and keep it close to reality, to protect it from creationism. And science needs religion in order to have a conscience, to know that, just because something is possible, it may not be a good thing."
The article also mentions "The Spiritual worldview provides another way of finding truth”.
The spiritual side of us can be interpreted in many ways. One is to link it, for example, to our love and appreciation of the arts, the ability to show empathy and act in an altruistic way. This, I suggest is a major part of out conscience.
"If music be the food of love, play on". Shakespeare had some good ideas on how to invoke our spiritual side. Most will concede that music can have a big influence on our state of mind.
I see no compelling reason to link these attributes to a deity as the only possible option, and see no reason that science relies on religion.
