I agree with part of that statement but not that it has anything to do with "lebensraum". Russia is by far the largest country in the world has has heaps of space, plus their population is actually declining due to very low birth rate.

Putin is just trying to put together the Russian world as he knew it and stop the disintegration of his country from west European and US influences. Clearly the US has been stirring up issues in Ukraine and just like when the USSR was trying to instal missiles in Cuba, Putin has said enough is enough. Crimea has been part of Russia for 200 hundred years, prior to its passing into Ukrainian hands by President K (who was an ex-Ukrainian boss and would never have imagined that the USSR would break up).

Gold is not going to do much on what happens in that region. However, if China and Japan get into conflict that could be a whole different matter.
