Alexander Graham Bell, of course, invented the first telephone. This invention was not the immediate success that Bell had hoped it would be. However Bell's big break through came when he invented the second telephone. That aside, Bell understood the concept that inspiration came from something greater than himself and this is perhaps best summed up in his famous quote:
"What this power is I cannot say; all I know is that it exists and it becomes available only when a man is in that state of mind in which he knows exactly what he wants and is fully determined not to quit until he finds it."
BTW...did you know that the word inspiration originates from the phrase "in spirit"??
