    To say that a nationalist attitude is anathema in Australia is a broad generalisation. My guess is that the average bloke in the street will not have a problem with it.

    My problem with nationalist pride/patriotism is that I simply do not understand it on an emotional or intellectual level. I consider it a form of brainwash in order to make it easier for the state to influence the citizenry. I am more proud of the fact that I am a good man as opposed to being an 'Australian'. To me, that is just my nationality and not a source of pride as it is not an accomplishment or an achievement: it is just a fact.

    I would suggest that most people in society, any society, that consider themselves 'patriots' or 'proud to be whatever' are simply that way because it is expected of them or they were brought up that way and really haven't given their values any deeper philosophical thought.
