This presentation describes a novel optical readout system for microcantilever gas sensors. A deflection noise density (DND) of 1 pm/sqrt(Hz) is demonstrated using low power infra-red lasers, giving rise to the ability to sense the thermally stimulated Brownian motion of microcantilevers at room temperature and pressure. This provides the ability to determine the resonant frequency of a cantilever without providing electrostatic actuation, and gives rise to the possibility to create remote sensing solutions using fiber-fed, passive MEMS sensors.
