    Olive,

By way of illustration ,there is one theory that tells us English is becoming the universal langauge because it is always in a state of flux and change and hence is always "becoming" contemporary. That is what I am suggesting has happened (and is happening even now )with our political and social institutions. When I used the term Western Culture I had in the back of my mind all it's input into our particular history that has led to the sort of Nation Australia now is.

However our particular history never had an equivalent of the French Revolution nor did it succumb to the philosophical "mystical romanticism" that was to be the breeding ground for Nazism.

So at least from our perspective, though there may have been radical ideas, our extended history could hardly have been characterised as change by radicals or extremists. In retrospect it was more of an evolution that produced our national characteristics. It is the history of that "evolution",I suggest, that is the foundation of what we enjoy.

As far as the Monarchy goes it has already been effectively consigned to the role of pageantry, is under the control of the British Parliament and in no way diminishes democracy in our country. eg. Whitlam was ultimately given his marching orders by the electorate.

The problem I have is that today's "civilisation changing" radicals and extremists, have no new or radical ideas but are merely mouthing the old doctrines of failed socialism and pacifism that have proved ,even in our memory, to be ineffective in improving the lot of nations and peoples and in producing peace within and between nations.

    llew.
