Education Minister Christopher Pyne was the target of a sustained and raucous protest on the set of the ABC's Q&A program last night.

The program began with Mr Pyne being asked a number of questions about the Government's proposals to deregulate university funding and suggestions that a number of youth training programs would be cut.

In a bid to give the Education Minister a "breather", host Tony Jones invited former parliamentary speaker Anna Bourke to answer one of the audience questions first.

As she began her answer, a group of what sounded like at least a dozen protesters unfurled a banner from the balcony behind the panellists while chanting slogans.

"No cuts. No fees. No corporate universities," they sang.

Jones tried to quell the rowdy mob, saying "OK guys, you're doing yourself no favours".

The protesters continued as security guards tried in vain to remove them from the studio.

"Chris Pyne, get out. We know what you're all about. Cuts. Job losses. Money for the bosses," the group chanted.
Mr Pyne tried to laugh off the protest.

"Does this mean you won't have me again?" he said, laughing.

Ms Bourke also saw the lighter side.

"Reminds me of Question Time. I feel like I'm back in the House," she said.

Jones again attempted to restore order but he was clearly unable to hear instructions from the program's producer.

As the protest continued unabated, producers cut to a clip of a previous episode in which Katie Noonan sang a cover version of Gotye's Heart's A Mess.

One or two minutes later, Jones welcomed the studio and TV audience back, saying "we had a little musical interlude there while we got democracy back on track".

"Apologies to the Minister, apologies to everyone on the panel, apologies to the wider audience watching," Jones said.

"That is not what we want to happen on this program. That is not what democracy is all about and those students should understand that."
