His exit might also make sense if he was looking to deal his shares to an interested party (eg Freeport) to support a full bid. In those circumstances a director would typically stand down. The is speculation of course, but is does make sense for Freeport to do the deal and they can spend their money at their leisure. I think slampoil may have mentioned something similar in an earlier post.
