Problem with irrigation in Nt is the type of soils . very permeable in most part which makes large scale flood irrigation not an option , the exception being the Ord region though again irrigation to fatten cattle to slaughter weights would hardly pay.In the past the yanks tried large scale silage based systems & I think Tipperary have gone back to that system to feed their livexport cattle .The old silage pits at honeymoon hill & the machinery to make silage left over by the sepo's in the 60's was still there in the late 80's.The biggest hurdles still are Livex, consistent supply & labour issues. If the livex falls away or stops then they are in clover & no one knows what the future holds there.I genuinely wish them well & will look on with interest.
