I realise the Collins class subs were a legacy of Beasley. Nonetheless, I still don't understand why they were pursued and pursued under Howard (was he trying to make a point??). Would have been cheaper in the long run to halt production, pay off the Swedes and buy fully built new ones!
A mate once told me an interesting aircraft analogy re these subs: Australia has spent billions trying to build the best prop driven planes around without realising you can now buy jet engines for much cheaper.
Ahh...the most expensive subs in the world...pity they don't work!
