what's viable for nst is different to what's viable for newmont. nst seem to be able to run mines more efficiently than a multinational gold miner (not surprisingly).
the nst crew probably believe they can find more gold but, in the worst case, if they find no new significant reserves, it would appear they would still make some reasonable coin off the existing reserves anyway.
note also that the existing newmont personnel come as part of the deal. newmont may not want the corporate and HR issues associated with closing down a mine and retrenching staff that may have only a couple of years left (worst case).

no disrespect intended in my comment re existing newmont staff. i suspect the mine still has a profitable future. maybe get your gold detector out after work and find some new reserves!
