    When you consider how large our mining industry is, population numbers and disbursement it is a given that wages are high and therefore making manufacturing costs high.

    Certainly the union involvement is disastrous (ask RIO train drivers) but there is quite a number of 457 visa workers keeping the numbers up.

    As we lack the number and skills of workers it just seems plain logical to me that:

    value adding industries (VAI) be able to import workers and pay home country rates

    while the unions are in decline to pressure (or legislate) for separate contracts in VAI

    incentives given to setup VAI

    that any company involved in a VAI be Australian owned.

    If we want to be competitive and not just a mining hole there just has to be a change in the way we handle mining, getting the most benefit our of a finite resource.
