inflation on food items is huge, page-23

No. I don't think food is going to get cheaper either…..we more and more use the local weekend markets to buy the produce we don't have ourselves. That said I must mention one very important facet that everyone with a backyard should consider…..That would be chickens….You can buy a used small aviary…ours is 2 square metres….used….for a hundred dollars or so if you look around hard enough…doesn't have to be in great condition - it's only housing chickens so if a bit of the roof is rusted thru or some of the mesh has rotted out….still good for many years of chickens. We keep 2-4 hens in them…usually Hyline Browns….who lay eggs every single day (almost-rarely miss a day) for about two years from twenty weeks old. At twenty weeks you can generally buy them from chicken farms, breeders, etc…for approx $20 each….They are worth their weight in gold. Not only do they produce eggs that are better and healthier (back to that in a minute)….than what you get in the supermarket….Our feeding pattern is waste vegetables trimmings etc, leftovers from the fridge of almost anything….a bit of chicken feed from feed stores…around $20 for 15-20 kilos depending on where you get it - average family would need one bag a year. We add a couple teaspoons of crushed oyster shell - cheap at City Farmers etc….to strengthen the egg shells…daily. And we pick the weeds from our front and back yards and they love it….and it, according to what I've read - improves the cholesterol levels for human consumption of the eggs…..Anyway I know the chickens love weeds….
So grow your own veggies - keep a few chooks (two will do for an average couple - if you have kids add a couple more)….And extra bonus…shovel out the aviary about once a month and straight to the compost bin where it rots down in a couple weeks (you will need to sprinkle some cheap hay in there every couple weeks - or just use lawn clippings)….and you will have some great compost fast that works wonders….
