safaris, "In the old days there were plenty of low end jobs, now there are hundreds of applicants for one job"

That's because there aren't any low end jobs anymore. Minimum wages have seen to that, and the unions enforce that. Minimum wages are the curse of the unemployed. Why would an 18 or 21 y/o care about a minimum wage, if the job can give them experience, something on their cv to take to a better job? All the low end jobs have been exported to Asia, and now people are complaining there is no work. Idiots.

"One was living in a backpacker hostel while another had no electricity, no fridge and no hot water."

One of each? Only one!!!!! Well, how big was the sample? What a stupid sort of article. So, I was born into a house with the dunny at the bottom of the garden, a bathroom shared between six houses and no running hot water. Electricity was on a meter - no money, no power. Fridges were for the rich. But my parents were happy, and Dad worked hard to get us out of there. And, of course, it was satisfying for him and Mum to move up the financial and social ladder.

Bunch of bloody wusses. Encouraged by a minimum wage.
