Former Leighton Holdings chief executive Wal King has been appointed deputy chairman of Africa-focused iron ore hopeful Sundance Resources.
Mr King is currently a director of Coca-Cola Amatil and deputy chairman of mining services group Ausdrill.
His appointment comes as the Perth-based company looks to raise $40 million to begin developing its Mbalam-Nabeba Iron Ore project in the Republics of Cameroon and Congo.
The company says it has secured a 10-year off-take agreement with global commodities trader Noble Group and will soon announce a port and rail engineering, procurement and construction contract.
Sundance chairman George Jones said Mr King's appointment coincided with the company moving towards the construction phase of the Mbalam-Nabeba iron ore project.
"Wal is arguably the most qualified businessman in Australia for this role," Mr Jones said.
"He has virtually unparalleled skills and experience in all the key areas required by Sundance."
Sundance hopes to produce iron ore in west Africa by 2017 following the collapse of a $1.3 billion takeover deal with China's Hanlong Mining.
Sundance shares were 0.45 cents, or 5.4 per cent, higher at 8.85 cents at 1240 AEDT.
