Australian company confirms discovery of diamonds in new exploration in Angola

The Australian diamonds Lucapa Diamond Company announced the existence of an important field of diamonds on new exploration in the region, In the North of the country.

According to company information, to which the Lusa had access today, prospection has confirmed kimberlite diamond potential in Se251, that concession, after recovered four diamonds, of different dimensions, among the first samples analysed.

With a surface of approximately 220 hectares, the area of the so-called Se251 prospection potential, according to the company, will be the "biggest" kimberlite field (species of magmatic rock with diamonds) identified in granting, In 3,000 square kilometres in the Angolan province of Lunda Norte.

The same information, the Director of Lucapa, Miles Kennedy, believes the recovery of these diamonds between samples as "extremely important" for stating, "without any doubt" that this "huge channel" under review "is, in fact, diamond industry".

"The Lucapa took six years to reach this point, which is just the beginning of the road that still lies ahead," pointed out Miles Kennedy, stating that this is a channel that should contain "different types of diamond".

The grant, whose exploration rights were extended in March 2013 by the Angolan Government for another two years until June of 2025, thus can host a large kimberlite field and is located about 150 miles west of the Catoca diamond mine, the world's largest producer and the fourth largest of its kind in the world.

Last January, the Australian company announced the discovery of a white diamond of 32.2 carats, shaped like an irregular dodecahedron.

The Lucapa sold until last May 6 million Australian dollars (more than four million euros) in placer diamonds recovered during the exploration phase throughout the granting, In 750 kilometers from the capital Luanda.

World diamond industry data indicate Angola as fifth largest producer of diamonds, but their production accounts for only 8.1 percent of the total value.

After petroleum, diamonds are the second most important export product of Angola.
