Kenya has been one of the most stable African countries for the last century. My wife was born there.
Saying that it is Africa and what we consider normal doesn't apply there. Her uncle was kidnapped collecting his mail at gun point in the late 80's He also left one of the top hotels 20 minutes before a 500 pound bomb went off. He spent the night running casualties to hospital, some friends he was dining with got out about 2 minutes before it went bang.
A family friend had his son in law hacked with a machete and their daughter and 2 grand daughters where lucky not to be raped. the son IL got to hospital and survived just, that was mid 90's.
I haven't met too many people from Kenya and even the ones that have had the bad experiences say they love the place, it's just what Africa is like..
