    Down on Cazaly

WA's new premier, Alan Carpenter, still hasn't decided who owns the Shovelanna iron ore deposit - monster Rio Tinto or minnow Cazaly Resources.

But he does seem to regret that so many punters have piled into Cazaly since it snatched Rio's lapsed tenement.

"Before they start speculating on the outcome, they should wait for the outcome, because I don't want to see people lose their money if the outcome goes against them," Carpenter told ABC Radio yesterday.

It's a little late for that. Cazaly shares have quadrupled since it nabbed Shovelanna and would plummet if it lost the deposit.

Carpenter also revealed he's pretty cozy with Rio Tinto chief Leigh Clifford.

Apparently Clifford learned of Rio's blunder on his birthday - and Carpenter happened to be at Rio's London head office that day for a scheduled meeting. "He raised the issue with me," was all Carpenter would say yesterday.

    Cazaly rose 1.5c to $1.57.
