Or it could be whatever is also causing Jupiter's weather systems to change over the longer term.  NASA has confirmed that the red spot continues to shrink year on year and is 50% the size it was in 1930's.

And further, the stripes suddenly change and disappear on a regular basis too.  

"The SEB fades at irregular intervals, most recently in 1973-75, 1989-90, 1993, 2007, 2010," says John Rogers, director of the British Astronomical Association's Jupiter Section."
