Of course anyone connected with a particular conflict will remember it, I was referring to the collective culture, priorities and memories of the average person not directly associated.
Russia and Afghanistan, certainly a prolonged occupation, but not a successful invasion. They never succeeded in subduing the local populace and there was always resistance in some form. I would think invasion would, by its nature mean a more permanent outcome.
