OK, Mike, totally agree about flowers. You said 'a present' which is not at all what I think flowers for someone who has died represents.
I give flowers to friends whose beloved dogs have died, not because it's going to help the dead animal, but just as a way of saying "I'm so sorry that you're without Rover". Many of us feel more distress at the death of our dogs than any human being in our lives.
But I expect many would find such a gesture bizarre also!
