A Muslim cleric in Britain has been jailed for nine years after being found guilty of inciting his followers to kill non-believers.

The Jamaican-born Sheik Abdullah el-Faisal was sentenced after the Old Bailey Judge Peter Beaumont found he had "fanned the flames of hostility".

"You urged those who listened and watched to kill those who did not share your faith", he said.

Judge Beaumont recommended that he serve half his sentence before being deported.

The Muslim cleric who is the first to face trial in the UK stretched an arm out to supporters as he was led from the court.

He is expected to appeal the sentence.
