I stand corrected - 1-3 years it is.
But still, the claim doesn't pass even the most basic smell test. I just went down and checked my inverter: in the past year, the 2.5 kW array on my roof has produced 1.75 MWh. Compared to coal-fired power, that's roughly 1.75 tonnes of CO2 avoided, per year. The total mass of material in the system is no more than a couple of hundred kg - to suggest that energy required vs. energy produced over the 30+ year lifetime of the array would even come *close* to being comparable is simply laughable.
