re: police drink driving story1 Most Police stations on the Gold Coast have Social Clubs and police often drink off duty(some on). The Surfers Paradise Station has one on the Roof 7-8 floors up looking down to Indy racing, very popular venue at racing time. Regular BBQ's on the roof or just drinks.
Some police would come and use the Road Side Breath Testing device in the Duty Sgts Office after a skinful and brag about their readings and then drive home.
Sometimes even after performing RBT earlier that night when on duty themselves. Yes lots of hypocrytes but that is the police culture. At least now they have light and mid strength as well as heavies, some a bit more responsible nowadays. Was present one night when a party was on and an Assistant Commissioner was singing Karoke, that was the nineties.
Big watering holes for police here now are as always Shooters and Melbas with the strip clubs also getting a hit.
I know of 2 police that died on duty on the G/Coast from traffic accidents(FOP), both detectives, one in his own car and one in an unmarked car on duty. Readings were covered up very high, and not much news in the paper as police only died and no member of the public.
Sad culture needs to be cleaned up.
