Yep...fair cop...I hadn't had my medication when I read that...but I don't think the irony was socratic...
And I may be wrong but upon reflection the essential arguments are very persuasive...I really can't see any future for government funded research and commercialisation initiatives in Australia. The track record is woeful and goes against the rational behaviour of markets, especially as Australia doesn't have the venture capital or hi-tech entrepreneurial flair to commercialise products like Bluegen.
On a more general note, the current government's strategy of cutting funding to CSIRO and getting out of the game of picking winners is the only sensible option. If this fruitless policy of trying to produce new products with government scientists (with few connections to business leaders) had not been in place to start with, maybe CFU investors would not have lost their money backing such a dog in the first place? I just don't know.
I imagine now that ARENA is effectively out of the picture and business has been freed up to pursue tightly focussed research we can finally anticipate some progress in profitable innovation in Australia. This country was never going to be successful with ventures like CFU - to be trying at all is an act of muddle headed economics - I'm looking forward with eagerness to the fruits of the current policy where money can now be freed up to pursue profitable advances in the energy sector where meaningful returns and real impact can be anticipated, such as clean coal...baby...baby...baby...woh...yeah...no future...who killed bambi...I stole an egg and look where they sent me...
