State puts I-99 plan on holdBy Mike [email protected] -- An aide to Gov. Ed Rendell said today that the state has scrubbed, at least for now, its plan announced a month ago to clean up the acid rock drainage hazard at Skytop by trucking a million tons of pyritic rocks to Indiana County.
Rendell spokesman Chuck Ardo said the overwhelming opposition from residents in Indiana and Cambria counties led to the decision reached by the governor and Transportation Secretary Allen Biehler.
A meeting scheduled for next Tuesday in Indiana County, part of the Environmental Protection Department's process to review permit applications for the cleanup plan announced Jan. 31, has been canceled.
"The reason for the postponement is to re-examine the issue to explore all the options," Ardo said.
