    There does generally seem to be a difference between the outlook of those who decide to litterally interpret the Old Testament as the literal word of God and those who adhere more to the New Testament while respecting the historical context and message of the Old Testament and of course who dont really care that much either way but still class themselves as Christians...
    It could probably almost be interpreted as different religions as we have seen through history as various different demoninations split from the central Christian Church primarily over their mode of Bibical interpretation and adherence to the current power structure , separate but still with enough in common to remain part of the umbrella of Christianity even though there have been periods of persecution and extreme vilification during periods of historical savagery...

    Getting back to the fundamentalists view, when you look at the fairly recent progress of our science of understanding of the formation of the universe from Hoyles "steady state" to the current big-bang, you can probably understand these fundamentalist Christians who would like to believe that The Bible is the word of God rather than inspired by God and written by men (mostly consisting of Gospel according to...type texts), start to believe more strongly that their literal interpretation as written in the Old Testament represents pretty much the real deal..
    You could probably not imagine a more Genesis-like creation story of the universe than the current Big Bang theory presented by scientists who have studied the matter for many years...

    The only signficant argument you could raise would seem to be over the interpretation of the time span, which from our current scientific knowledge-base we know depends on the frame of reference of the observer...

    I certainly dont dispute the existence of fruitcakes and extreme fundamentists in any religion and as we see we even have apparently intelligent and educated people falling for the gaia-based AGW cult-like pseudo-religion but of course it is somewhat difficult to characterize a religion by its crackpots, unless those crackpots are the current principal defining characteristic and defining force of the religion...
