Wow that is a ballsy decision . I don't know anyone who has done that . Friends have done full day rental with guide for about 100 euro a hour per boat and saw a lot more of the real day to day Venice which can be beautiful , spectacular and other parts a dive hovel. They could hop on and off and not worry about the boat as there is plenty of rules Even with their driver the Venice water police pulled him over and fines are high. I have owned boats for yonks and have done canals in Europe and UK but never considered Venice and god only know what rules those mad Italians have. I just can't see it being relaxing but on the other hand can't wait to hear how it really was after you have done it. One point is that I had trouble with travel insurance as renting a barge was considered as a extreme sport - hmmm so check you have coverage in case something screws up.
